.DISCUSSION...
Issued at 250 PM CDT Wed Apr 9 2025
Water vapor satellite imagery show an amplifying trough beginning to
dig into the Missouri River Valley this afternoon. At the surface,
a pre-frontal trough continues to progress across Kansas, and
winds have shifted to northwesterly across much of the area.
Downsloping across the area has allowed for temperatures to rise
into the mid to upper 70s this afternoon. The arrival of the
synoptic front (and subsequent cooler temperatures) will likely
be midday Thursday. However, afternoon temperatures should still
rise into the low 70s. Clear skies and a surface ridge sliding
across the region will maximize radiational cooling, and Friday
morning lows will easily drop into upper 30s and low 40s.
Afternoon highs on Friday will generally be near average.
Another deep layer trough will translate over the central/northern
plains later this week into the weekend. Ahead of this system,
southerly flow will return on Saturday and will be quite persistent
through much of Sunday. While moisture is expected to be meager,
much warmer temperatures appear to be a slam dunk for Sunday
afternoon. This may be the first 90-degree temperatures of the year
for many locations (including Wichita). While sufficient, albeit
shallow moisture finally arrives late, and despite a strong cold
front pushing across the area Sunday night, strong capping and poor
upper support should suppress shower and storm development. Milder
temperatures arrive on Monday and should continue through the
beginning of next week. Long term global deterministic and ensemble
models show the potential for a more active pattern starting as
early as late next week, and this will likely be something to
monitor moving forward.

.AVIATION /12Z TAFS THROUGH 12Z THURSDAY/...

VFR conditions will persist through this TAF period. A wind
shift is sweeping through southeast Kansas right now shifting
winds from the south to the northwest by early this afternoon.
Winds will become light and variable overnight and then increase
again out of the northwest by mid morning tomorrow.
